The City of Piedmont and Piedmont Beautification Foundation (PBF) will host the annual tree-lighting celebration tonight at Community Hall, Wednesday, December 3, at 6 p.m.
Lights up Piedmont continues Piedmont’s historic tree lighting ceremony, dating back to 1969. This is the fourth year under its current name, and the event has expanded to include winter light celebrations around the globe.
Piedmont Boy Scouts will be serving hot cider donated by Piedmont Grocery and hot cocoa supplied by the Heafey-Baum Group. The Recreation Department staff will serve latkes, gifted by the Chabad Jewish Center.
Parents and kids will have an opportunity to meet Santa in the Community Hall starting at 5:30 p.m. to take photos. Kids will also have the option to write letters to Santa. PBF will provide supplies, including coloring pencils, paper, and envelopes, along with elves to help craft the letter. A mailbox with express delivery to the North Pole will be placed at the Community Hall.
Piedmont Girl Scouts will host a light-themed craft and games table in the courtyard. Each attendee will receive a fiber-optic light wand so they can be part of the moment and light up Piedmont together as a community.
Music will be provided by the Troubadours, Piedmont High School’s a capella choral ensemble. Sari Kaplan will perform introductory music highlighting the Hanukkah celebration of light.
A Make-A-Wish foundation recipient will flip the switch to light up the 80-foot redwood, menorah, Piedmont Park, and Community Hall.
PBF, in conjunction with Piedmont Garden Club, will decorate the park and string lights on the 80-foot redwood early on Tuesday, December 2. Piedmont Garden Club obtains, maintains, installs, and removes the colorful LED lights that adorn the illuminated tree each year.
Patty Dunlap, president of the PBF, is very excited for tonight’s Lights Up ceremony. “PBF is really excited to host the event in conjunction with the city. Many volunteers have been working hard to ensure that everyone in attendance, no matter what age, has a great time,” she added.
