Chris Maggart as an Eagle Scout in Piedmont

Born in 1963, Chris Maggart was raised in Piedmont and was the youngest son of Barbara and Ben Maggart. When he was 11 years old, he was diagnosed with brain cancer (Medulla Blastoma). He was treated at UCSF for years and eventually was cancer free. In 1978 he and his brother Eric became Eagle Scouts. In 1980 he graduated from Piedmont High School and went on to St. Mary’s College to earn a BS in Economics in 1984.

After graduation both he and his brother, Eric, who had a rare bone cancer (Ewings Sarcoma) rode their bikes across the United States stopping in towns and cities to tell their story and ask for donations to the American Cancer Society. They raised over $700,000 on their two-month trip.

When they came home Eric was still in treatment, but Chris worked as a civilian auditor for the U.S. Navy on Mare Island. He eventually moved to Boise, Idaho, and married. He and his wife, Merry, liked living in Boise.

When he was 46, he started having strokes that doctors felt were due to his cancer treatment over the years. He became disabled and eventually had to live in a long-term care home. He was there for five years and died peacefully in his sleep on April 9, 2025, just six days before his 62nd birthday.

Chris will be put to rest in the family niche with his brother Eric (1960-1988) at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland. We will meet at the office prior to the internment. It will take place on July 18th at 1:00 pm. The two brothers will be together again. Anyone that knew Chris or Eric are welcome to attend.
